Omotola Adeyelure. Tongue Rebirth

Tongue Rebirth

In the realm of spoken certitude, what then shall we say?
Unfurl the woes of tongues, our originality essence at play
For in this discourse, we confront a bitter plight
The shackles that bind our identity, casting shadows so tight

Oh, let us converse today, with hearts unswayed
And scrutinize the ways our children bear this judgment's cruel charade
For fading dialects wear the regalia of inferiority
Where our African tongues are deemed feeble, meek, and mundane

Let's embark on this journey, unburdened and free
To celebrate the richness, the legacy that should be
Do we boast of our offspring mastery, the colonial tongue they wield
Yet their struggle to embrace the mother's tongue is acclaimed?

Oh, it’s time to shed these layers, to reclaim what is true
To harmonize our languages, to honour and renew
For in the cadence of our heritage, is pride and beauty
Restoring dignity is a rightful duty

So, let melodious chronicles be rewritten today
To dismantle the chains of linguistic decay
To embolden our children, their roots in full bloom
Where pride intertwines with the melodies that consume

Our mothers didn’t dispose their lingua in a dung
Decolonising language of superiority, rights the ancient wrong
For in our originality and reverence, we find our way
Reviving our African tongue and forever it’ll prevail
